Hi! I’m Ning, I’m Thai and living in the Netherlands. I moved here with an MVV visa, and part of that process required me to pass the Dutch exam (het basisexamen inburgering) before moving.

Small note before you read: I’m not an exam expert. This is only my personal experience, and rules or timelines can be different depending on your country. Please always check the latest information from the official websites too.

Hi! I’m Ning. I’m Thai and living in the Netherlands. I moved here with an MVV visa, and part of that process required me to pass the Dutch exam before moving 🥹

At the time, I was working full-time as a product manager, so I prepared for the exam by myself with complete self-study. Mostly on weekends, sometimes when my brain was already tired after work 😅

I wanted to share how I prepared, in case it helps anyone who is preparing too.

Small disclaimer: I’m not an exam expert. This is just my personal experience and how I prepared for my own exam.

Also, every country and timeline may be different, so please check the latest updates from the official website too.

My prep at a glance

What My experience
Study style Self-study, no extra books
Study time Mostly Saturdays and Sundays
Total prep time Around 2-3 months
Most serious month The last month before the exam 😅
Exam date 8 July
Result date 22 July

I prepared by myself and didn’t buy any extra books. Because I work full-time, I mostly studied on Saturdays and Sundays. In total, I prepared for around 2-3 months, but the last month was when I became more serious about it 😅

1. Get familiar with the exam first

I started by trying the official practice exams first:

Practice exams on Naar Nederland

Then I finished the Naar Nederland E-learning once:

Naar Nederland E-learning

I also used the Thai self-study package here:

For me, doing this first helped because I could see what the exam looked like before trying to study everything.

2. Reading

I read through every chapter of the Naar Nederland Workbook again.

While reading, I translated the words and wrote down vocabulary that came up often.

After that, I practiced with extra Reading materials I found online.

Personally, I felt that the more vocabulary I remembered, the easier this part became.

My method was:

Duolingo helped me remember vocabulary too.

3. Speaking

I downloaded the file with 432 speaking questions and filled in all my answers:

Speaking A1 question file

Then I practiced with this playlist again and again until I felt less nervous answering:

For this part, I used ChatGPT to help brainstorm simple answers that felt easy for me.

I also asked it to check whether the grammar was correct.

My goal was not to make perfect answers. I just wanted answers I could actually remember and say out loud.

4. KNS

For KNS, I watched the Thai version of the Naar Nederland videos from the Thai self-study package:

I also watched this video:

In my case, the questions were based on this.

5. Before the exam and on exam day

Before the exam, I reviewed the vocabulary I had written down and did one last round of KNS review.

On exam day, don’t forget to bring your photo and passport.

I brought the wrong photo, so the staff asked me to take a new one at a nearby shop and bring it back 😅

In the exam room, I was the only person there.

The staff let me test the system first, then I started the real exam.

I spent around 30 minutes on all parts in total, out of the 1.5 hours given.

After finishing, I left the exam room right away. I didn’t really spend much time reviewing my answers 555.

Timeline

Date What happened
8 July Exam day
22 July Received the result

Not counting weekends, it took around 11 days.

For me, studying by myself was possible. It was mostly about practicing regularly and making the most of the materials that were already available.

Good luck to everyone preparing for the exam 💕

Thai

Naar Nederland

แล้วก็เรียน E-learning ของ Naar Nederland ให้จบ 1 รอบ:

Naar Nederland E-learning

Material ภาษาไทยใช้จากหน้านี้ค่ะ:

2. Reading
